Garage Door Sensor Repair
If your garage door sensors aren’t working the way they should, you’ll know it. Either the door won’t fully close, or it reverses for no reason. We can replace or repair your garage door sensors safely and properly.
What Is a Garage Door Sensor?
Garage door sensors are those small devices you’ll usually find mounted near the bottom of the door tracks, one on each side. They “talk” to each other by sending an invisible beam of light across the opening. So if you’re accidentally standing in the way and block the beam, your sensors will tell your opener to reverse. It’s a built-in safety feature that keeps your garage door from accidentally closing on something (or someone) it shouldn’t.
Most people don’t think about these sensors until they stop doing their job. If they get misaligned, dirty, or just stop working, you’ll notice your garage door acting weird right away. This can disrupts your plans and is a safety hazard,
That’s why we take garage door sensor repairs seriously, and you shouldn’t put it off until it gets even worse. Even though the sensors are small, they’re just as important as any other part in your garage door system.
Common Issues We See
Garage door sensors may be small, but there are a handful of things that can throw them off and cause headaches for homeowners. Knowing about these problems and what causes them helps you to determine if you need to replace or repair your sensor.
To help you better understand what’s happening and how we diagnose your issue, here’s some issues we usually run into during our garage door sensor repairs.
Even the smallest nudge can cause the biggest issue. If your garage door sensor is misaligned just a bit, the beams won’t connect, which means it’ll think something is in the way. Your garage door might stop halfway or not even close at all, even though nothing’s in the way.
The lenses are pretty sensitive, so even dust over time or cobwebs can block it. When the lens is covered, it’s like putting your thumb over a flashlight, the beam can’t get through, so it thinks there’s something in the way, when there’s really not. A simple wipe down should help, but be careful not to misalign it.
Wires running from the sensors to the opener can loosen over time or get chewed on by pests. If there’s something wrong with the connection, that means the sensor can’t talk to the opener properly. This then makes it seem like the sensor isn’t working, even if your lens are fine.
Believe it or not, direct sunlight at the right angle can overwhelm the sensor’s beam. It’s rare, but in certain spots or times of day, the sensors may think the path is blocked when it’s really just the sun hitting them head-on.
Like any electrical component, sensors can simply wear out. Over years of use, internal parts can fail, leaving you with a sensor that no amount of cleaning or adjusting will fix.
Signs It’s Not Working
Garage door sensors don’t last forever. After a while, things like dust, vibrations, or even a slight bump can knock them out of alignment or stop them from working completely. And when they’re not working right, you’ll know.
Here’s what to watch for:
- The door starts to close, then goes right back up
- You have to hold the wall button down just to get it to close
- One or both sensor lights are blinking or completely off
- You’ve already tried cleaning them, but nothing’s changed

Answering Your Questions
The most common sign is your door refusing to close, even when nothing is in the way. You might also notice the opener lights flashing or the door starting to close and then reversing. If you’ve checked for obvious blockages and it’s still happening, it’s usually the sensors.
It depends on the condition. If it’s just dirt, wiring, or alignment, a repair usually does the trick. But if the sensors are old or damaged, replacing them can be a smarter move, it’s not a huge cost, and you won’t have to worry about them failing again soon.
A blinking light usually means the sensors aren’t seeing each other properly. It could be dirt on the lens, a slight misalignment, or a wiring issue. The blinking is basically the sensor’s way of telling you, “I’m not connected right now.”
Sometimes, yes. If a sensor got nudged out of place, you can try gently adjusting them until the indicator lights line up. But if they keep slipping, or the problem isn’t just alignment, that’s when calling us in saves a lot of frustration.
Not safely. Some openers let you hold the wall button down to force the door closed, but that bypasses the safety feature. It’s really just a temporary workaround until the sensors are fixed or replaced. We do NOT recommend using your garage door with broken sensors, as it is a big safety feature and should not be ignored.
Nothing complicated. A quick wipe of the lenses now and then to clear away dust or cobwebs helps keep them working. Beyond that, if you notice the lights blinking or the door acting up, that’s the time to give us a call.
